As we enter 2022, it is great time to ask ourselves two fundamental questions:
Why do we do it?
What if we can?
These are the two main questions asked by David Goggins’ book, Can’t Hurt Me.
I just finished it, and it left me highly inspired.
You may have heard of Goggins due to his motivational instagram antics and his ultra-athlete feats, but the book shares a much deeper look into how the badass was born.
If you haven’t heard of him, here is the summary:
Goggins had a terribly abusive childhood where he suffered physical and mental trauma. The difficult upbringing culminated in a state of depression in his early twenties as a 300-pound roach exterminator.
Unhappy with his life, he decided to make a change and to see what he was capable of. For the next twenty years (and going) he went on to become one of the most motivated and physically accomplished people in the world.
If you want to see some highlights, skip to bottom, otherwise I truly recommend you read his book.
It is not likely that we will go from zero to one thousand like Goggins did, but we can ask ourselves to find our why and what if.
Why - our spark, Chispa, or reason for being.
Plainly put, what goals or tasks fill you with endless energy and motivation? Are you driven by your family, success, health, fitness, something else? Find your why and the direction that it points you in, and you will be unstoppable.
For me personally, I have a few sparks that have all molded together into my fire.
Entrepreneurship goes back over five generations in my family, and I am very driven to carry the torch. Similarly, I find extreme purpose in the legacy of my co-founder who showed me the impact a single person could have. Lastly, my children fill me with the energy to build a business and life that will inspire their own sparks.
Take moment to consider what your why might be and write them down.
What if - we can achieve our dreams?
Let’s change the narrative in 2022 from Dream Big to Believe Big. There is no difference between you and your heroes except they committed themselves to their spark and believed it could happen.
This year I am working on some of the biggest goals of my life. Physically, I have signed up for a 30-mile race in the middle of March. As a business, we will continue our efforts to scale.
Take a moment to write out your goals for 2022 and think about this quote by Goggins:
“We all need small sparks, small accomplishments, in our lives to fuel big ones. Think of your small accomplishments as kindling. When you want a bonfire, you don’t start by lighting a big log. You collect some dry grass. You light that, and then add small sticks and bigger sticks before you feed your tree sump into the blaze. Because it’s the small sparks, which start small fires, that eventually build enough heat to burn the whole fucking forest down.”
It all starts with a spark, and I challenge you to find yours in 2022.
If you are already have it, well then, toss some logs on it of course.
Let’s see what we are capable of.
Happy New Year, enjoy the vibe train playlist you all curated.
Love,
Log Dog
P.s. Goggins Highlights After Finding His Spark:
In three months he lost 105 pounds to qualify for Navy recruitment.
Six months later he stared BUD/S (the training to become a Navy SEAL).
After three hell weeks he become a SEAL and then an Army Ranger.
Then on a whim without training he tries a 100-mile foot race.
He completes the race, the last 50 miles on broken legs. He be literally lost controls of his bowels, shit himself, broken his feet and kept going.
This qualified him for the hardest race in the world, Badwater 135
He finished 5th in Badwater with almost no experience.
He then went on to set the world record for pull ups with 4,030 in 24 hours.
Most recently. Goggins turned his hustle from weight room to boardroom, selling over three million copies of his memoir, which he self published one of the best selling memoirs of all time, maintaining all IP rights.
What an inspiration he is! Even as a retired banker, I can still find my sparks and set goals for the new year and beyond. Happy New Year to you, your family and all at Chispa.
